Tabish Khan the @LondonArtCritic picks his Top 5 Art Exhibitions to see this Summer. Each comes with a concise review to help you decide whether it’s for you.
Charlie Godet Thomas: Little Sound @ Vitrine
Like the falling of leaves, the world is full of subtle sounds that often get drowned out in urban settings. This exhibition asks you to stop and listen as drips of water land in metal pans where the words of these subtle sounds have been cut into their sides. It’s a meditative exhibition that rewards viewing art alone and in silence. Until 13th July
Amy Beager: Slow Blink @ Kristin Hjellegjerde, London Bridge
These bright vivid paintings are dedicated to the artist’s recently deceased cat – RIP Ashitaka. Showing her cat at rest and baring her teeth, it captures all her moods and it’s a celebration of her life. It’s like a photo album we flick through to remember those we’ve lost and it’s a fitting tribute. Until 6th July.
Paul Winstanley: Reprise @ Cristea Roberts
There’s a long tradition of mountain landscapes in art history and Paul Winstanley takes photographs of those works, degrades them and changes the colour to literally present them in a new light. It reminds me of our own memory haze as images in our minds fade over time. Until 27 July.
Kofi Perry: Remnants from a Distant Future @ The Lightbox, Woking
Drawing from inspirations as wide-ranging as ancient Egyptian art to science fiction, Kofi Perry’s paintings can be seen as traditional, contemporary and futuristic depending on which part of his works we’re looking at. Earthy tones, solid torsos and strange creatures all mix in his arresting works.
Until 21st July.
Metamorphosis @ Saatchi Gallery
This impressive exhibition shows how we can make photography and film using more natural means, whether that be Almudena Romero using sunlight to create photography on leaves or Scott Hunter looking at alternatives to the toxic metals used in analogue photography. Until 28th July.
