Taking Measurements for A Window Replacement Project

Homeowners may not know the requirements of a successful replacement project. Taking the windows’ measurements before you buy the new ones for the window replacement project is very important. It helps save the time, money, and trouble one goes through when buying a door with the wrong measurements.

It is important to understand how to go about the process of taking the measurements in order to ensure that you get everything right. Anyone can take the measurements of the window with the proper guidance and confidence. However, there is no harm in getting an expert to help with the process. Learn more about taking measurements for a window replacement project below.

Check The Windows For Square

The major step in taking the measurements for the windows is to check the corners of the frame to determine how square they are. This does not mean that the windows should all be square since there are so many shapes of windows.

Different windows have different shapes, but the corners should all be square. The ninety degrees at the corner is a very important factor to check when buying new windows for replacement. The sizes are different, but the corners are all the same in angels.

Checking out how square the corner of the window is an easy process that does not take a lot of time. You will need a tape measure for this process. For the first, you will need to measure from the top starting on the right, where the vertical and the horizontal trim meet.

Proceed to extend the tape measure diagonally in order to come up with the exact measurements. This step will help determine if the corner is at an angle of ninety degrees. Repeat the same for the tops and the bottom to come up with both dimensions.

If the measurement for both the top and the bottom is within a quarter of an inch, you should be able to buy any standard window, and it will fit correctly for your window replacement project.

If you take the square measurement and realize that it is not within a quarter of an inch, then something is off, and you need to take action in getting a square corner of your frame before you buy the replacement windows.

Taking The Width Measurement

For the width, you will start by taking the measurement from one side of the jamb to the other jamb from the inner edge.

You should also remember to measure the distance between the dry walls. Ensure get the width of the existing opening is right since it determines whether the window will fit properly. Ensure to take the measurement from the jambs and not from parting beads of the old opening of the window.

When taking the width measurements for replacement, take them from three points. Ensure to take the opening’s bottom, middle, and top.

Once you have recorded the three points, ensure to use the smallest measurement when buying the window. Once you have noted down the smallest measurement, round it off to the nearest inch for more accuracy in your replacement project.

Taking The Height Measurement

Always ensure that you do not record the trim measurements as part of the recordings. Take the height measurement starting from the highest point, and for accuracy always ensure that the window is still.

Similarly to the width measurements, take the readings from three points. This should be the right side, the left side, and the middle in a vertical position.

You should also use the smallest measurement rounded off to the nearest inch by the replacement windows.

Taking The Depth Measurement

In most cases, people do not consider taking the depth measurement when considering buying new windows. It should not be a norm since the depth determines the opening and the closing after the window replacement is complete.

When taking the depth dimensions, do not consider the pulleys and the strips. This is because these two are left out during the installation of the new windows.

To take the measurement, run the tape measure from the outside part of the frame to the inside, and remember to record for reference.
