Xavier Hufkens is to present an Art Basel Online Viewing Room of new large scale paintings by American artist Katherine Bernhardt (b. 1975). The six colourful and complex paintings on view reflect elements of the summer of 2020. Often praised for her uncompromising approach to composition, Bernhardt’s “pattern paintings” effortlessly bring together seemingly incongruous characters, narratives and themes.
The works feature the Pink Panther outside, wearing a mask, social distancing, worrying about the virus and enjoying Little Caesar’s pizza on the beach. The paintings also contain miscellaneous pop culture elements (Clorox Bleach, Nitido, Little Caesar’s Pizza boxes) all while large images of the airborne coronavirus hover nearby.
