Irene Machetti’s Open Space weekend Kitchen Takeover

Open Space continues its mission of supporting emerging artists with a digital programme, exploring the use of food as a medium for art just like their postponed exhibition Edible Goods. Kitchen Takeover invites artists to use Open Space’s Instagram for the weekend, sharing their kitchen secrets with the community, from recipes to drawings, musings or performances.

“If global food waste was a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the USA and China.”

(Ben Elliot)

Using words sent to her from throughout this week: be it a verb, colour, emotion, ingredient, country of origin or image, Irene Machetti will create a recipe that reflects trust, building a community and breaking down walls of traditional recipes and methods. Most importantly, with this collective, unconscious recipe she will try to produce the least waste possible, bringing this global issue to the forefront of her practice.

Irene Machetti is a freelance journalist, whose writing has appeared on Vanity Fair, Arteviste, The Courtauld News, Venezia News and other publications. She contributes regularly to FAD magazine, where she founded the column FOOD ART. Through interviews, collaborations, and participatory pieces, she explores the correlation between food and art, analysing the social and political meaning of these two spheres.

Irene obtained her BA from the Courtauld Institute of Art, where she specialized in Latin American contemporary art, with a dissertation on performance artist and poet Regina José Galindo. She also wrote extensively on Food Art, with a special focus on how artist Inês Neto dos Santos uses food as a medium for female artistic empowerment.
