Marseille soap or Savon de Marseille is a traditional hard soap made from vegetable oils that has been produced around Marseille, France, for about 600 years. The first documented soapmaker was recorded there in about 1370. In 1688, an edict by Louis XIV codified its production. It stipulated that no butter or other animal fats could be used in the soap mixture, but “only pure olive oil – “anything else and the merchandise will be confiscated”. Among many other things, the edict also ordered production stopped during the summer, because heat affected the quality of the oil, and forbade the use of the fresh oil before the first of May, giving the oil time to mature after the annual midwinter pressing.
Back to Basics handmade soap is produced also using 100% organic olive oil fats and is made using a cold saponification process, which is suitable for all types of skin, even the most sensitive – including babies, children, and people with eczema.
Not only can you use it for yourself (body, face, hair) but also to care for your home (laundry, dishes, and floors), making it a product that combines practicality with low overall costs and pure, natural origins.
The soap, which is free from palm oil and fully biodegradable, contains 7% emulsion content (oil that is known as “unsaponified”) which makes it very mild and gives it a powerful moisturizing effect.
Back to Basics is a family run business, in fact, the idea came to the owners’ Nil (dad), Sophie (mum) when Sophie became pregnant with their daughter Nael all the soaps they used to wash her created rashes or irritation of the skin – so they decided to create their own soap to wash and clean their baby and their business was born.
Their friends and family encouraged them to share their products with you and all the people out there who wish to turn to a healthy and simple life. That’s when they created their online shop “Back to Basics” (“Comme Avant” in French) with a handmade natural soap whose components are healthy for all skin types.
They now produce a range of natural and handmade products including marked by the ingredients used in their creation like their toothpaste with Siwak ( a teeth cleaning twig made from the Salvadora Persica tree) or their deodorant powdered with Iris (Iris is a genus of 260–300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris).
