Ancient & Modern, the gallery founded by Bruce Haines in 2006, is to open a new space in Mayfair, changing its name to Bruce Haines Mayfair.

Haines’s reasons for relocating – for the last nine years Ancient & Modern has been based on Whitecross Street, Islington – is to make the gallery’s artists more accessible to the public and collectors.

About twenty years ago it was from west London to east London. Now everything seems to be turning full circle again.’
Explaining the gallery’s name change, Haines says:
‘So many businesses in the area are eponymous, like Asprey’s on New Bond Street and Anderson and Sheppard on Savile Row, so it seemed right to put my name above the shop.’

The gallery’s first show will be Ultramarine, a display of new paintings by the acclaimed British artist Tim Braden, opening on Friday, October 9th. Braden’s work can also be seen at Bruce Haines Mayfair’s booth at the Frieze Art Fair (October 14th – 17th). The gallery is also participating in FIAC (October 21st – 25th), and at Artissima (November 5th – 8th), where it will pair paintings by young German artist Jan Pleitner with table-top sculptures by Italian artist Luisa Gardini (b.1935), both of whom make works that recall a European response to 1950’s American abstraction.

About Bruce Haines: after art school at Liverpool Polytechnic and a post-graduate course at St Andrew’s University, Haines worked for 13 years in the public sector. He organised the first museum show by Jeremy Deller, ‘Unconvention’ in 1999, and as an Exhibitions’ Curator at Camden Arts Centre he brought together the late, hitherto unseen, dot paintings of Francis Picabia; he was also responsible for a survey of the American ‘Beat’ artist Wallace Berman (1926-76), and exhibitions by contemporary British artists David Thorpe and Steve Claydon. In addition to his work with Ancient & Modern, he curated the Wales Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale, working with John Cale, the celebrated artist and former member of the Velvet Underground.
