LAST CALL Submissions close 31 July 2015
Aldeburgh Music and Suffolk Coastal District Council have announced a competition for an outdoor sculpture for children at Snape Maltings.
The aim is to offer a vantage point across the marshes at Snape and a new view over this flat and beautiful landscape. This new piece will sit in the landscape amongst other works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Sarah Lucas and Alison Wilding. Submissions will be made in the form of sketches and a 200 word description of the entrant’s vision.
The competition is open to all and the organisers encourage entrants to think broadly and creatively whilst paying close attention to the Equality Act 2010. The winning entry may take the form of a viewing platform, an optical device, a moving structure or a technological marvel. The sculpture must be selfsupporting and designed so that it can be put up and taken down annually, with the prospect of touring the region in the future.
We are delighted to announce that the judging panel will include artist Ryan Gander, architects Sam Price and Patty Hopkins and Aldeburgh Music CEO, Roger Wright.
A shortlist of three entrants will be awarded £1,000 each to develop their idea further. They will be given time with a structural engineer to help them evolve their scheme into a feasible design. A winner will be selected from the three shortlisted designs and awarded a commission of £15,000. The winning design will be installed in time for the 69th Aldeburgh Festival in June 2016. The winning designer will have a construction budget of £50,000 and will be supported by the competition organisers throughout the process.
