Tabish Khan brings you five art exhibitions in London that you should visit during the week. Each one comes with a concise review to help you decide whether it’s for you.
1. Anselm Kiefer @ Royal Academy
One of the exhibitions of the year with a retrospective of one the greatest contemporary painters. It has everything, scale, depth and the weight of history – one not to miss.
2. Art of the Brick @ Old Truman Brewery
Can LEGO be art? In this case it’s a resounding yes. There may have been too many replicas for our liking but the original works are wonderfully self-reflective.
3. Confusion in her eyes says it all @ Maria Stenfors
One of the best sound artworks we’ve come across lies behind the curtain – creepy and unsettling. The other works may not measure up but it’s worth a visit for that one work.
4. Self @ Ordovas
Yes another museum quality, sparingly curated exhibition from this Mayfair gallery. Works by Hirst, Koons, Bacon and Picasso explore different takes on self-portraiture.
5. A Brilliant Afterlife @ Barakat
A great collection of Chinese funerary artefacts and a chance to explore the great collection of works of this gallery, hosted across four floors.
