For many the African continent seems to exist in a cycle of conflict and unrest, and responsive efforts of rehabilitation and reconciliation. We celebrate the emancipation of countries within the continent, but does it equal freedom of the individual or heal the wounds bandaged in the wooing word, liberation?
Sulger-Buel Lovell is proud to present its second exhibition; Liberation (Un)Masked, curated by Kefiloe Siwisa from South Africa, featuring South African sculptor Neill Wright and Ivorian mixed-media artist Turay Mederic (based in Morocco).
These two artists look beneath the mask of liberation and share with us what they find underneath.
Wright’s bronze sculptures and Mederic’s mixed media paintings simultaneously induce opposing emotional responses. Wright’s works are a sophisticated rendition of Lego-men, and Mederic’s naive and brightly hued canvases evoke a child-like spirit. The seemingly playful aesthetic momentarily disguises the gravitas of their provocative examination of society.
The exhibition aims to visually unveil that which is often concealed behind tableaux’s of the idyllic. It hopes to serve as a reawakening to liberation as a continuous journey of agency, rather than a static conception.
