The Young Friends of Bezalel University in Jerusalem, Israel will host a hands-on evening of BioArt on Thursday, May 15th in Bushwick, NYC. The event will be lead by Bezalel Alumna Nurit Bar-Shai where she will teach an interactive BioArt painting class at her revolutionary community biolab, Genspace. A relatively new practice, BioArt is quickly gaining in popularity and significance and it is no surprise one of its boldest pioneers is Bezalel born.
Through this workshop you will create living works of art with a variety of genetically engineered and naturally occurring strains of bacteria. After incubation, the strains on your bacterial palette will produce a variety of colors, either glowing red, green, or yellow or producing a purple pigment. Afterwards, you’ll be sent a photo of your microbial masterpiece.
Upon completion, artists will enjoy a brief tour of the fascinating Genspace laboratory, and conclude with mixing up their own cocktails by extracting strawberry DNA using Bacardi 151.
