Launched in 2013, the Berlin Art Prize honors contemporary art from Berlin and presents it to a wider public.
Through the 15th of March 2014, any artist who has been living in Berlin for a minimum of six months is invited to apply for the prize, at berlinartprize.com
The first Berlin Art Prize, in 2013, received applications from over 1000 artists, 31 of which were nominated for the prize and took part in the exhibition and catalog. This cross section of contemporary art production in Berlin is taking place again in 2014: a group exhibition from the 14th to the 29th June 2014 will show 30 nominated artists in the Kühlhaus at Gleisdreieck – and will also be documented in a catalog. The exhibition opening coincides with the announcement of the three winners. They will receive prize money, as well as a trophy, exclusively designed by the artist Markus Selg. In collaboration with the Goethe Institute, all three prizewinners will be invited to a one-month long residency in Georgia.
The 2014 jury is composed of:
Cosima von Bonin – artist
Kimberly Bradley – writer and critic for Frieze, The New York Times, Süddeutsche Zeitung, among others
Nicolaus Schafhausen – curator, director of Kunsthalle Wien
Judith Hopf – artist, professor at the Städelschule, Frankfurt
Egill Sæbjörnsson – artist and musician
The Berlin Art Prize was founded by four cultural producers and is the only award of its kind in Berlin. It is not linked to any institution or corporation. Unlike other awards, the artist’s previous exhibition history, education, and any recommendations are irrelevant. The artist is evaluated anonymously, with the jury only taking into consideration their artistic work.
