From crowdsourcing to crowdfunding, artist Phil Hansen spent a month in front of a LIVE webcam feed taking stories of limitations from people, and creating a 9x13ft work of art called Refraction, which is completely made out of text. Hansen just revealed his short documentary, funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign, which peeks into the creation process and follows the inspiring story of an 18 year old who’s about to shave her head.

Here’s what took place:

over 1,000 Stories
over 100 Sharpies
over 100 Square Feet of Writing
over 600 Gigs of Video
over 1 month of Live Webcam

“My writing hand still hasn’t recovered. It has a hard time gripping.” Despite the physical and emotional challenges this project posed, Hansen said “being able to connect with people I’ve never met on an intimate level is one of the most human experiences ever.”
