Part Two: Trains and Skates and Paint – burn Yard™ Live in Budapest

“We are a team of artistic scientists at burn and burn Yard Live was our experiment. We brought together the world’s best artists from different countries working in different mediums with different styles and we let them create something new. This event may have taken place in Budapest but these walls and these stranded vehicles are a snapshot of creativity on a global scale.”  – Prinz M. Pinakatt, Global Director Sports & Entertainment Marketing, The Coca-Cola Company

On the 29th July 2013 over a thousand people congregated at an abandoned market hall in Budapest.

They had come to witness the unveiling of conceptual artist Gerry Judah’s ‘skate-able’ sculpture: An impressive 14-ton functional structure that would later play host to champion skateboarder Rune Glifberg’s skills.

They were being welcomed to burn Yard, a global creative program that nurtures and inspires creative talent by providing a platform to showcase groundbreaking ideas. Burn Yard are doing it big. The whole project is exploding with energy. This is no bland branded event, this is a grand stunt.

I was lucky enough to see the initial meeting for this much anticipated Judah, Glifberg and M-City project back in April, you can read about it here. And that’s how I know how momentous and sensational the collaboration was going to be.

The photos of the event go someway in translating how atmospheric and electric the night of the 29th July would have been. I’m sure the BURN® energy drink was flowing as the audience enjoyed the excellence of the ‘Danish Destroyer’, Rune Glifberg’s skateboarding tricks whilst DJ Avicii filled the space with electronic dance music and yes I’m really jealous I wasn’t invited to this part.

Having met with Rune, Judah and M-City it is clear how impressive the curation of the project really was. These guys are so different, not just in the subject matter of their talent, but in their creative approach, their style, their personalities and their energy. Therefore the flavour of the event is a fusion of what each member of the collaboration contributed to the event.

Gerry Judah said, that when he saw Rune skating on his sculpture, that he felt it was finally finished and that “The sculpture has its own life but these young guys skating on it is what gives it soul.” Whilst Rune said “As soon as I saw Gerry’s sculpture for burn Yard I was transported into the routine, the tricks and the flips. My heart was pounding super fast. Riding it was pretty sick.”

Gerry and Rune are so appreciative and respectful of one another’s work. There are not many instances that would have played homage to such a unique relationship. Where else would have these guys have met?

Burn Yard is incredibly successful at bringing diverse creative communities together. The ‘vibe’ is eclectic: it’s international; it’s aesthetic; it’s movement; it’s audio; its history and it is a celebration.

As M-City says in relation to his street-art team’s part: “We are a collective of street artists who set out years ago to make a point and to make a difference with our art. Now, years later, burn has brought us together, from countries all around the world, and we can celebrate our art and celebrate creativity together.”
