Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo’s series of installations titled The Army of Melting Men use ice as a medium to provoke viewer’s thoughts on the effects of global warming. Azevedo creates the ice sculptures by filling moulds with water, freezing them and then painstakingly retouches each one for individuality.
The artist places crowds of seated ice figurines on city steps and the sunlight slowly eats away at the sculptures until all that’s left are dark puddles, as if the ‘ice people’ are drowning.
The watery remains are supposed to show rising sea levels that could reach devastating levels (+3.3.ft) by 2100.
