Watch Live : David Shrigley’s debut opera Pass The Spoon Sunday 6th May 2012

On Sunday 6th May David Shrigley’s debut opera Pass The Spoon will be streamed live to audiences all over the world from Southbank Centre through The Space, a new on-demand initiative by the Arts Council England in partnership with the BBC that offers audiences a new way to experience some of the most exciting arts events from across the UK.

Audiences can watch Pass The Spoon live from 7:30pm on Sunday 6th May at www.thespace.org

The Space runs for six months, from May to October 2012 giving audiences unique access through their computer, tablet, mobile or smart TV.

Described as ‘daft and instantly lovable’ by The Guardian this spectacular new performance by Edinburgh based theatre production company, Magnetic North, is created by Shrigley with award-winning composer David Fennessy and acclaimed director Nicholas Bone, and features live music played by the Red Note Ensemble.

Pass The Spoon is a work of musical theatre about cooking, for which Shrigley has written the libretto. The piece, which features singers and a chamber orchestra stars June Spoon and Phillip Fork – two TV chefs addressing the audience as if it were a television studio.

Various root vegetables get interviewed in order to determine their suitability to be involved in a soup. Other characters include an alcoholic, manic-depressive egg named Mr Egg, and Banana, the voice of reason.

David Shrigley brings his eye for the bizarre, comic and downright disquieting to bear on the world of opera alongside his first major retrospective Brain Activity at Hayward Gallery.
