The Fine Art Society Contemporary will be the venue for the launch of Diamond Photograms by Rob and Nick Carter.

See the artwork with the artists and Francois Delage, CEO of De Beers Diamond Jewellers, for a special evening of champagne, canapés and diamonds.

The Carters are a husband and wife artistic duo that have been collaborating for over fifteen years. Their work is centred on the possibilities of light, colour and form and has taken many mediums including camera-less photography, painting, installation, neon and film. Diamond Photograms (2011) continues their preoccupation with light, colour and form. The pure brilliance of light manifested in diamonds initially inspired the unique camera- less photography that beautifully captures the full colour spectrum of the stones against a profoundly black background.

The artworks are formed of 100 De Beers diamonds totaling over 40 carats and configured in 12 separate panels as the star constellations of the signs of the Zodiac. The arresting works are made without the use of a camera or a lens; the Zodiac formations are exposed in a single flash of light on light-sensitive paper, exquisitely capturing the Fire, Life and Brilliance of the De Beers diamonds.

Diamond Photograms speak of the remarkable optical qualities of the diamond and when arranged in star constellations they remind us of the extraordinary scale of the universe. Culturally diamonds have always been associated to power and prosperity and were for centuries the exclusive privilege of Kings and Queens. But as timeless witnesses of Mother Nature they also have a more dramatic story to tell about the beauty and secrets of our planet and its relationship to the universe beyond. It is this micro and macro viewpoint that makes the Carter’s piece so compelling, particularly in light of the continual need to understand the human condition, here referred to by the practice of star signs.
