Thomas Draschan is one of a small array of young artists currently emerging out of Austria with critical acclaim into the international contemporary art arena. Notably recent solo exhibitions at the Armory Show New York with Lothar Albrecht and in 2010 a sell out show at Lothar Albrecht gallery in Frankfurt. This is Thomas Draschan’s second solo exhibition at CARTER presents London.
A participant in many former Actions of Hermann Nitsch, Draschan has been a prominent and influential voice with his experimental films over the last decade and more recently his art has focused on complex, finely tuned collages derived from a huge collection of amateur and vernacular photographs. The re-combination of existing images into a new, condensed and enriched form is one of his main concerns made up of 1970’s Italian porn, popular culture and 60’s pop art. Sex, death, high art and low morals permeate his art.
Draschan mines the past and toys with the present transcending it into a visionary cultish comedic and chilling totem to our contemporary lives.
