Natasha Rees brochure at Vitrine Gallery art opening Thursday 17th Feb 2011

17 February 2011 – 26 February 2011
brochure A Series Of Site -Responsive Works

brochure is a new series of work at Vitrine Gallery; A platform for artists, who work site-responsively and primarily with installation.
The exhibitions are informal in nature and happen quickly.

The series encourages fresh and gestural works that occupy the space sporadically throughout the galleries main program. Artists are encouraged to try out new, experimental and un-cluttered ideas,
the space becoming a platform for them to test works.

There will be five slots per year and one artist will be invited to create an installation work for each. Each artist is given the entire space for 10 days plus 1 day for installing. The preparation period is short, encouraging the fresh approach to creating work away from the confines of a formal exhibition. The aim (and reason) of curating this as a series is for a dialogue to grow between the works and between each artist’s reaction to this unique exhibition space. Documentation of each work will be presented together within the the framework of one project; building into a collection and acting as an overview of the entire project.

Fools Golden develops from ‘Fool’s Gold’ a piece from a recent body of work, ‘Broca’s Area’. ‘Broca’s Area’ explored the structure of formality, and regiment, in relation to some of the organising principles of language. Adopting the iconography of ‘bling’ as a vague (yet suggestive) narrative backdrop, ‘Broca’s Area’ widens its scope through the configuration of objects. Each of the works relaying tentative links between conceptual and visual associations; an experiment in form and a chain of systems for reading and engaging with various modes of language. Meaning thus becomes malleable and liquid.
