Doug Foster answers FAD’s questions

1. If you weren’t an artist, what else would you be?

That’s the problem.

2. Name 3 of your least favourite artists.

Artists who don’t exhibit any craft skills don’t really do it for me. They know who they are.

3. Anytime, any place – which artist’s body would you most like to inhabit?
That’s just creepy!

4. What is your favourite ‘ism’?

Surrealism can be quite entertaining.

5. What was the most intelligent thing that someone said or wrote about your work?

Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion. That’s what makes it fun.

6. And the dumbest?
I still think everyone is entitled to have their own opinion.

7. Which artists would you most like to rip off, sorry, I mean appropriate as a critique of originality and authorship?

I try not to repeat myself, never mind somebody else.

8. Do you care what your art costs? State your reasons!
You have to make some money from your work so that you can afford to make more work.

9. What are the three big ideas that you would like your work to express?
I’m still working on the small ideas.

10. Are you a political artist?

My work is about people and for people, but I don’t promote any particular dogma.

11. How do you start the process of making work?
I research a subject that I find interesting until the details inspire a visual approach. Apart from that the process is mainly chaotic.

12. If MoMA and the Tate and the Pompidou wanted to acquire one of your works each, which would you want them to have?

Any of them can have whatever they want! I’m not going to be fussy!

13. What is your favourite cheese?
I try to avoid cheese nowadays, but sometimes you just can’t avoid a bit of feta in your salad.

14. What’s next for you?
Hopefully, the same, but more so.
