French artist Dran creates a modern day Tintin — but with fury and spray paint Pictures on Walls (POW) present Dran: My Everyday Life, one of the winter’s most exciting installations, taking place at a secret location in Central London. (Berwick Street)
Dran hails from Toulouse, South West France. He was introduced to the world of comic books by his father and inspired by cartoonists such as Hergé and the Gallic tradition. Graphic art has long been a respected and much loved art form in France, but has struggled to gain mainstream recognition in the UK. Until now.
POW – the East London gallery and print house responsible for bringing the likes of Banksy and Jamie Hewlett
(Gorillaz) to the forefront of public consciousness, believe that in Dran they have spotted another winner, and one of the most exciting new artists for a generation.
My Everyday Life will feature sculptural installations, paintings and street art. The installation’s main character is
Scribouille, a homeless puppet whose life is devoted to nothing but creating art. To accompany the main off-site installation, POW is also presenting a range of limited edition prints, including one hundred silk-screened scenes, each individually customised by the artist to spectacular effect. The print show, entitled I Have Chalks takes place at the gallery in east London, from 2 December.
Dran works in a variety of media to which he brings a warm yet steely take on contemporary society. He has just published his sixth book.
My aim is to champion the idea of drawing by hand, using the imagination to make things magical – Dran
