Save The Redsand Sea Forts with The Hive Gallery Task Force

Hive are offering a chance to be part of their collaborative Arts and Heritage Task Force, and help save the enigmatic and awe-inspiring Maunsell Sea Forts. These structures, also known as the Redsands Forts – are towering concrete and metal structures that were built as coastal defences for the protection of London from bombing during the Second World War. Constructed on shore, then floated 6 miles out into the Thames Estuary off the coast of Whitstable these forts accommodated search-lights, intelligence-gathering, and anti-aircraft guns. 70 years later, they seek to accommodate you!

They want to recruit 25 of you who possess a passion for both art and heritage to help us in our aim of uniting these to preserve and utilise these awe-striking structures.

They are offering a chance to come aboard and do just that. Next week, in line with the Whitstable Biennale, They will take you, free of charge (trips usually cost £250 per head), to the Forts where Hive is to establish artist’s residencies and workshops, in exchange for some hard but rewarding work.

To be part of this, Hive’s most major and important project they need practical, adventurous, and dexterous people who are looking to gain experience in the gallery/ arts projects world – and who have a sleeping bag and toothbrush to hand as they will be invited to sleep aboard the forts themselves – to help set up and prepare for one of our most exciting arts projects to date.

History will abound, as large, communal meals will be prepared aboard, and enjoyed on the roof-top under the sun or sunset, right where the anti-aircraft guns once stood gazing skywards.

Working as part of the Hive team, in alignment with the renowned arts festival the Whitstable Biennale, and in preparation for Hive’s own upcoming arts programme during the Whitstable Oyster Festival, this trip will not only be an amazing – and free – chance to experience and help save one of Britain’s most unique heritage sites, but also a great addition to any
