REGENT STREET WELCOMES THE ELEPHANT PARADE

The Elephant Parade is raising awareness for the charity, Elephant Family which hopes to raise £2 million from the auction of these unique artistic representations of one of nature’s most endangered species. In the past century, numbers of the Asian elephant has tumbled from 250,000 to just 25,000 and if this trend continues, the species will be extinct by 2050.

Brightly coloured models of baby elephants will appear in Regent Street from 3 May – 22 June 2010 that will be both amusing and decorative.

Regent Street will have its own elephant to appear in New Burlington Place, a metallic elephant decorated by Regent Street that will reflect Regent Street’s historic architecture and highlight the quintessential variety and fashion diversity of this international shopping destination. Others can be discovered at in Swallow Street, at the National Geographic store, Regent’s Place and Heddon Street. All visitors are also welcome to visit the E Parade pop-up shop.

To accompany the Regent Street elephant there will be five others all designed by different artists including:

Gavin Tuck’s elephant designed on behalf of Regent Street; a metallic elephant that will reflect Regent Street’s historic architecture and highlight the quintessential variety and fashion diversity of this international shopping destination.

Tim Haywood’s elephant, Jade and the elephant Inspiration, elephant Inspiration, A precious animal portrayed in a precious material.

Rosie Sander’s elephant, Vanda and the elephant Inspiration, “My paintings are of large dramatic flowers and I felt orchids would be appropriate for Asia.“

Sam Hacking’s elephant, Oak, Chestnut, Plane & Elm and the elephant inspiration, “I wanted to focus on the idea of the Indian forest conservation, but tying it into English woodland conservation. So I chose four classic trees that are in most London parks, one for each leg of the elephant.”

Dick Roberts’s elephant, Cupcake and the elephant inspiration, “The thought of depleting the jungle habitat and the need for an elephant to have an opportunity to survive, if only by subterfuge, camouflage.”

An estimated audience of 25 million is expected to enjoy this summer spectacle and Regent Street is especially proud to host its colourful herd and hopefully assist in bringing attention to this important cause.
