Dr. Sandler, Professor Emeritus of State University of New York at Purchase, is the author of numerous publications, including four surveys of art since World War II: The Triumph of American Painting: A History of Abstract Expressionism; The New York School: Painters and Sculptors of the 1950s; American Art of the 1960s; Art of the Postmodern Era: From the Late 1960s to the Early 1990s.
He is a former president and current board member of the American Section of the International Association of Art Critics. He was the director of the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York, and a co-founder of Artists Space Gallery in New York. In 2008, he received the Liftetime Achievement Award in Art Criticism from the International Art Critics Association.
Mark Rothko (1903-1970) is one of the most renown international artists, one of the members of artists’ group that founded new art movement – abstract expressionism. The artist emigrated to the United States in 1913. He studied painting at Yale University from 1921-23, and was later awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Yale in 1969. Rothko has been the subject of six major surveys and retrospectives, including the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1998), which traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; the Kawamura Memorial Art Museum, Japan, which traveled to three museums in Japan (1995-96); the Tate Gallery, London, which traveled to Museum Ludwig, Cologne (1987-88); the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1978-79); and two exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1970 and 1961 – the retrospective in 1961 traveled to London, Amsterdam, Basel, Rome, and Paris. Rothko’s work is in numerous permanent collections worldwide.
