In January 2009 Barack Hussein Obama II became the 44th President of the United States, the first African American to hold the office. His campaign to the White House was unlike no other in America’s history. Obama’s personable and face-to- face qualities, combined with a clever marketing strategy gave people a message of trust, progress, and change – inspiring hope to the world.

This book “Hope” provides a striking and comprehensive visual chronology of the posters and other paraphernalia that was created for Obama’s run for the presidency. More than 170 posters have been selected from Hal Wert’s personal collection, the largest Obama poster collection, known to exist.

Most have been seen only by a limited number of viewers in the primary states. Others have rarely been seen outside the urban core or the art gallery world. An exception is the series of Barack Obama “HOPE” posters designed by artist Shepard Fairey which became the iconic images of the campaign and seen by millions.

The foreword has been written by Ray Noland, the street artist credited with starting the nationwide guerilla poster movement in support of Obama.

Author Hal Wert has been a professor at the Kansas City Art Institute since 1993. He has authored a number of publications, book reviews, and papers on a
range of subjects, including presidential politics, war relief posters, and
military history.
