Bankrupt Polaroid company to sell off important collection of photographs

dead-polaroid
Polaroid has asked the US Bankruptcy Court in Minneapolis for permission to hire Sotheby’s to organise an auction and, possibly, private sales of its important collection of Polaroid photographs, reports the Wall Street Journal. The now bankrupt company has a collection of around 16,000 photographs by some 1,600 artists includes work by artists such as Ansel Adams, Stephen Shore, Robert Rauschenberg, Chuck Close and Andy Warhol. The company has encouraged artists to use their equipment and film since the 1940s, often giving artists free film or cameras to use. The collection is currently housed in Boston and Le Musee de l’Elysee in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has been lent to museums around the world. Polaroid hopes that money from the sales will help to pay off some of its creditors. via (artreview)
