United Visual Artists’ first solo exhibition, at The Smithfield Gallery, in Farringdon, which opens from 3 – 26 June.
They have produced a beautiful series of light-boxes for the show, based on visits to post-industrial sites, including Dungeness Power Station, and an old Welsh slate quarry in the Yorkshire Dales. At each location, UVA set up and photographed a 1.5 metre light and air-filled balloon between the hours of twilight and midnight. Looking rather like a low harvest moon, the balloon gently illuminated the surrounding landscapes.
UVA has previously worked with the likes of U2, Kylie, V&A, Massive Attack, Battles, and Tate Modern, creating phenomenal interactive installations that synchronize graphics, lights and music perfectly with their surroundings, often as real-time immersive viewer experiences.
Deus is a photographic exploration of the seductive quality of artificial light in the natural world. This body of work grew from an extended study of form and experiments on how a powerfully illuminated presence affects the surrounding environment.
