£1.6million to expand South London Gallery

hire_empty_sm
South London Gallery is expanding, with a £1.6million project to restore the neighbouring derelict house pledged to the gallery by Southwark Council. Leading the expansion is 6a Architects, the firm also responsible for Alex Sainsbury’s recently opened Raven Row gallery in east London. The plan is to increase exhibition space by 100% and more than quadruple the gallery’s educational and community outreach facilities. 6a has previously worked with the gallery on Brazilian artist Rivan Neuenschwander’s major 2008 installation Suspension Point. Only 10% of the funds were sourced publicly through Arts Council England, the rest being acquired through individual donations, trusts and foundations, and two auctions held by Christie’s. Completion is anticipated for spring 2010. Via (The art newspaper)
