Arts Council England, the national development agency for the arts in England, which distributes public money from Government and the National Lottery, is to cut a quarter of its staff to meet government cost-saving requirements.
The Arts Council is planning to reduce its staff of 622 people to 473. The cuts will save £6.5m a year, which will be ploughed back into arts organisations. According to a spokeswoman for the Arts Council, the job losses will come from all areas of the organisation, from the executive board down.
The measure is part of a restructuring to meet the government’s requirement that it saves 15% on administration costs by 2010.
