Review: “..how is it towards the east?” at Calvert 22 Gallery

May 1st – June 2nd 2013, 22 Calvert Avenue, Shoreditch, London EC2 7JP United Kingdom www.calvert22.org

This month Calvert22 are taking a new approach and have transformed from gallery to archive, opening up a show that will take its form as a season of talks, workshops, and screenings around the theme of Eastern European immigration in London’s East End.

Arnold Circus and the surrounding area is a perfect location for a critical investigation of this kind: The East End has long been described as a separate and distinct identity due to the high density of migrants that populate the area: from Huguenots in the 17th century, to Jews in the 19th Century to Bangladeshi in the 20th Century.

The gallery space has been kept minimal, with several tables of red painted wood from Siberia displayed around the gallery to display various research material from book sources, as well as films and audio recordings. By juxtaposing written history with oral and visual history, and personal with collective, the show underlines how memories can be archived and shared in different ways.

The title of the show has been borrowed from and builds on William Morris’s classic work of Utopian science fiction News from Nowhere.”, where he begins to question socialism. “How is it Towards the East” successfully creates a dialogue between the surrounding area and its unique history, and presents a full calendar very appealing to those who wish to learn more about socialist traces in London and Utopian ideas.
Upcoming events include a screening of Edna Politi’s 1983 film Anou Banou (Sun 12 May, 4:30 pm-6:00 pm) and “Free Press?”, a panel discussion in collaboration with the Courtauld Institute Research Forum. http://calvert22.org/events/future
