Gallery Takeover

The videos of “National Selfie Portrait Gallery” will be on view in London at the Moving Image video art fair from October 17 through 20. The artists we gathered have pushed the selfie format to the limit, pushing the barriers of self-disclosure and showing the rest of us how we might advance our smartphone self-portraiture.

Alexander Porter’s video uses 3D imaging technology to turn the artist’s face into an immersive landscape, while Carlos Saez’s piece is a surreal journey into the depths of the selfie mirror. Kim Asendorf and Ole Fach have created an app that filters the user’s image, fracturing it into recognizable computer icons. The app will be on display at the fair for visitors to try out and take their own next-gen selfies.

Each selfie video will sell for $500 in a unique version, while the app will be available in an edition of five for $500 each. Experimental collectors should be pleased — these works are both innovative and affordable.
