Most contemporary art fairs’ criteria require participants to have a physical location and to have run exhibitions for a few years. But this year Frieze New York will allow case-by-case exceptions, two of whom, Nicole Klagsbrun and Tig Sigfrid, are already planning to exhibit in May’s fair on Randall’s Island.
The change in accommodating increasingly common gallery models that don’t involve maintaining a cost-intensive physical space in pricey locales is interesting especially as Frieze London has not dropped its physical location requirement. Frieze New York has also added a second VIP preview day, making the fair five days in total.
