DOUGIE WALLACE Stags, Hens & Bunnies A Blackpool Story
Glasgow born photographer Dougie Wallace, hence his moniker “Glasweegee”, is renowned for his expressive and often humorous social documentary and a distinct style of street photography.

The Glasweegee’s photo book, a new publication by Dewi Lewis Media, “Stags, Hens & Bunnies – A Blackpool Story” will be presented at the historic 18th Century Clerkenwell Courthouse Old Sessions House, Wednesday 25th June.

This pop-up social documentary photo show, will juxtapose the photographers unusually invading works, within the context of an historical Grade 2 listed building, where 14 prints will be installed along the staircase and within hidden rooms. A short film composed by the artist will run throughout the night, soundtracked by karaoke interpretations of kitsch modern anthems such as ‘Chapel of Love’, ‘Like a Virgin’ and ‘Don’t Stop Me’. The artist will be presenting his work and signing copies of “Stags, Hens & Bunnies – A Blackpool Story”, with limited editions prints of different sizes available for purchase.

Wallace’s new work is an ironical yet pungent socio-anthropological account of the most curious pre-marital habits providing us with a witty, irreverent however deeply human gaze upon real British culture.

Wallace is particularly interested in portraying a more often ‘judged’ side of humanity that would often rather remain hidden and by other factions of society, brushed under the carpet. Those human traits of vulnerability, ugliness, release to the point of excess which all have but been often repressed for the purpose of fitting within society frameworks have centre stage in Wallace’s new collection.

Wallace’s soul comes from his Weedgie roots; he speaks the language of the working class and has a direct genuine approach that you can immediately connect with, within his work.

Like a proper ‘Weedgie’ *, Dougie Wallace doesn’t patronise but sees humanity and pathos in the carnage that is Blackpool. –?Irvine Welsh

Dougie Wallace has captured Blackpool in all its profligate glory. – Alan McGee

This is the first of a trio of Wallace’s books, which will include Wallace’s renowned body of work ‘Road Wallah’, Dewi Lewis, out in autumn followed by an autobiographical account; ‘Shoreditch Wildlife’ Hoxton Mini Press.

The show and celebration of Wallace’s filter-less view on British culture will continue with an exhibition at the Hoxton Gallery in Shoreditch from the 24th of July – private view, till 3rd of August.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Largely self-taught, he took up photography seriously after having served four years in the army. Often known as ‘Glasweegee’, Wallace believes that his Glasgow upbringing has helped shape his style, which has been described as ‘hard edged’ and ‘visually exaggerated’, conveying a personalised point of view that is both believable and absurd. His work has featured in many publications including commissions for The New York Times and Stern Magazine, Germany. Other essays include: Travel, The London Omnibus and Reflection of life.
