ART NEWS: Room & Book a NEW book fair from @ICAlondon + @ClaireDeRouen Books

Room & Book, ICA Art Book Fair In collaboration with Claire de Rouen Books
Friday 6th June – Sunday 8th June 2014 Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London, SW1Y 5AH
www.ica.org.uk @icalondon @ClaireDeRouen

The ICA, in association with Claire de Rouen Books, is to present Room & Book, a three day art book fair. Under one roof, visitors will be able to engage with zine aficionados, legendary specialists, magazine experts, and artist book connoisseurs – in what promises to be a unique
???gathering of the best specialist bookshops and dealers in the UK – both young and long-established.

Highlighting contemporary approaches to book design, a number of artists will also present their own works including Tauba Auerbach and Christian Flamm. Works on sale will start at £10 upwards and visitors will be able to browse publications from a range of themes including art, photography, fashion and design.

Room & Book will be the first art book fair in London to focus exclusively on the role of the book dealer. There will be approximately twenty dealers at Room & Book, and each will present a collection of iconic publications from the last 30 years, alongside their vision for more in-print titles that will become the ‘new rare’.

Participants confirmed so far include:
Arthur Fournier Fine & Rare, Bookmarc, Christian Flamm, Claire de Rouen Books, Diagonal Press, Ditto Press, Elegantly Papered, Koenig Books, Louis Vuitton Maison Librairie, Luminous Books with Anagram Books, Maggs Bros (Carl Williams and Titus Boeder), Oliver J Wood, Bernard Quaritch Ltd, Simon Finch, Sims Reed, Test Centre Books, The Village Bookstore, 20th Century Art Archives.

To accompany the fair there will be a related series of events including a panel discussion on the idea of ‘the new rare’. Speakers will consider the question ‘In this age of publishing-on-demand how do you define “rare”?’ In addition there will be a reading by artist Bruno Zhu, workshops and book launches.

“We’re experiencing a golden age in publishing – from a cultural perspective, it’s as vital as ever and sitting comfortably within our digital age. I hope Room & Book will celebrate the abundant creation, distribution and collection of all kinds of art publications”

– Lucy Moore, Director, Claire de Rouen Books

“We’re absolutely delighted to be working with Claire de Rouen Books to bring the very first rare art book fair to London which will be unique in its focus and presentation. By inviting some of the most passionate book dealers to exhibit here at the ICA and involve artists, we hope to create an unparalleled three day event. Whilst celebrating long established iconic publications, the fair will also present works which are undoubtedly destined to form the next wave of coveted books.”

– Gregor Muir, Executive Director, ICA

Some Cool Stuff that’s gonna happen
Lily Luahana Cole, co-owner of the Clare de Rouen bookshop, will be at the fair doing a book signing for her new book ‘Gabriel Orozco: Impossible Utopias’ .

+ Test Centre Books, a London-based dealership run by Will Shutes, are bringing very rare film footage to sell at the fair which features Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd, as well as items from Iain Sinclair’s superb collection.

Shutes says:

‘Probably the main item I will bring is a film from 1969 entitled Psychedelia, dir. Kevin Whitney, which contains footage of Syd Barrett – an extreme rarity (!). I will be selling the two Super 8 reels which form the film.
