‘These watercolours were recently painted on the street in and around Fez and Marrakech. The whiteness of paper suggests the glaring, bleached-out setting against which figures stand out or into which they seem to melt as if vaporised by the heat. The Islamic clothes of these figures against this empty background suggest aspiration towards the spiritual or the unbounded even while they are fixed in time and space by strong black shadows cast by the harsh light.’
