In Unlock Art: Unlock Art: Where are the Women? Jemima Kirke examines the struggle that women have faced over the centuries to be represented in a male dominated art world, and how they developed innovative strategies to survive it.
The film explores how female artists played a central role in experimental art (think Performance Art e.g. Marina Abramovic and Photography e.g. Cindy Sherman) and how, by the 1970s, some women artists decided to take on the establishment which led to a radical re-think of the way history of art is presented.
Unlock Art aims to take viewers on a journey through various art movements and themes, from the history of the nude and humour in art, to Surrealism and Pop – offering the need-to-know facts, and making the arts more accessible to a wider audience.
