Monday, November 4, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
There was a time when all art was bought through galleries and dealers, with the gallery handling all of the marketing and press while the artist simply created art for sale.
The internet changed all of this, largely for the better. Artists are now able to market themselves through their own website, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and art fairs designed solely for unrepresented artists.
Galleries are also now able to market their artists online, no longer solely reliant on foot traffic to generate interest. Thus giving them the ability to attract interest from around the country and abroad. So much so, that even Amazon has now launched their own art section.
But what does this mean for the gallery-artist relationship – is this bond not as strong as it once was? Is selling online too impersonal? Can you really make a purchasing decision without seeing art first-hand?
These questions will serve to spark a debate and discussion on the evolving artist and gallery relationship. The expert panel will feature:
Chair: Tabish Khan – Art Critic for Londonist and Author of FAD’s Weekly Top 5
Eleni Duke – Owner, Curious Duke Gallery, London
Kate Knight – Artist with Curious Duke
Jack Gibbon – Director, Antlers Gallery, Bristol
Tim Lane – Artist with Antlers
The talk is free to attend but preregistration is required: https://cdg.eventbrite.co.uk/
