Absolut Art Bureau announces finalists for 2013 Absolut Art Award

Absolut Art Bureau, the unit within The Absolut Company responsible for global art initiatives, have just announced the finalists for the 2013 Absolut Art Award.

In 2013, for the first time, the award is being presented both for Art Work and Art Writing, continuing the commitment of ABSOLUT to celebrating artists who enhance social imagination and experience, and supporting research into art writing and the development of critical theory.

Unrestricted by age or geography, five artists and five art writers for the 2013 Award have been selected by a distinguished international jury, led by 2013 Jury President Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev.

The finalists for the 2013 Absolut Art Award are:
Art Work: Anna Boghiguian, Theaster Gates, Goldin+Senneby, Renata Lucas and Seth Price
Art Wrtting: Lars Bang Larsen, Luis Camnitzer Coco Fusco, Hito Steyerl Hamza Walker.

The 2013 Absolut Art Award will be presented to one winning artist and one winning art writer on September 20th, 2013 in Stockholm, Sweden, during a special weekend of events to celebrate Stockholm’s contemporary art scene (September 19th – 21st, 2013).

The winning artist in the Art Work category will receive a cash prize of €20,000 plus a budget of up to €100,000 to develop and produce a new art work, which will be donated to an ABSOLUT partner institution.

The winning art writer will receive a cash prize of €20,000, complemented by a budget of up to €25,000 for the publication and distribution of a new book, in collaboration with a leading publishing house.

About Absolut Art Award
The Absolut Art Award was instituted in 2009 to mark 30 years of creative collaborations with artists. Since then, the Absolut Art Award has celebrated artists with the capacity to enhance social imagination and experience. In 2012, Absolut Art Bureau announced a new format for the Absolut Art Award, which now provides recognition and project funding not only for artists but also for art writers. The new structure for the Award allows each of the five Jurors and ten Nominators to recommend five artists and one art writer, respectively, generating a maximum of seventy-five nominees for the Art Work category and a maximum of fifteen nominees for the Art Writing category. The 2013 Award Jury is led by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, former Artistic Director of dOCUMENTA (13).

In 2012, Absolut Art Bureau announced a new format for the Absolut Art Award, which now provides recognition and project funding not only for artists but also for art writers. The 2013 Award Jury is led by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, former Artistic Director of dOCUMENTA (13).

Art Work
This category consists of a €20,000 cash prize, complemented by a budget of up to €100,000 to produce an art work. The work will then be donated to an ABSOLUT partner institution.

Art Writing
This category consists of €20,000 cash prize, complemented by a budget of up to €25,000 to be used for the publication and distribution of a new publication. Absolut Art Bureau will collaborate with leading publishing houses on the design of the book, which will form part of the new Absolut Critical Writing Series, and will be distributed in leading bookstores as well as online.

Jury President
Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev – Curator, author, and researcher into artistic practices, the histories of art, and the politics of aesthetics. Menschel Visiting Professor at The Cooper Union in New York and was Artistic Director of dOCUMENTA (13).

Jury Members
Beatrix Ruf – Director and Chief Curator of the Kunsthalle, Zürich and artistic director of the Ringier collection.
Chus Martínez – Chief Curator, El Museo del Barrio, New York and previously head of department at dOCUMENTA (13).
Maria Lind – Director of the Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm and independent writer and curator with a particular interest in the practices of contemporary art institutions.
Susan Hiller – UK-based artist best known for her works formed around cultural artefacts from contemporary society, which are found in institutions around the world.
