Jerwood Visual Arts (JVA) and Drawing Projects UK invite artists to submit entries for the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013, the UK’s largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing.

Selected from original art works, and now in its 19th year in this format, the Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence and exploring the boundaries of contemporary drawing practice within the UK. By showcasing the work of students fresh from art school, alongside that of more established artists, the Prize has helped contribute to the careers of numerous well-known British artists including, amongst others, Eileen Cooper RA and Tom Hammick (2004), Stuart Pearson-Wright and Ian Davenport (2007), and Emma Talbot (2008).

This competition is a platform for drawing practitioners to showcase their work alongside other leading contemporary artists in this field, and provides those selected with the opportunity to help define the concept of drawing for future generations. This year, the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 welcomes three exceptional leading art experts onto its panel: Kate Brindley, Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art mima; Michael Craig-Martin RA, artist; and Charlotte Mullins, art critic, writer, broadcaster, and Editor of Art Quarterly, who will create an exhibition that explores and celebrates the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice in the UK.

Last year saw a substantial increase in the total prize fund from £11,000 to £17,000. The First Prize of £8,000 was awarded to Karolina Glusiec for her hand drawn animation, Velocity. Karolina reflects:

‘Winning the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2012 has been a great experience for me,and totally unexpected. It has opened many doors; I’ve taken part in workshops and lectures and met numerous great artists. It has enabled me to carry on doing what I enjoying doing most, and what I would like to continue doing in the future; to carry on drawing.’ Karolina Glusiec, First Prize winner, Jerwood Drawing Prize 2012

The Prize is open to all UK based artists, from student to established, working with drawing. From an anticipated submission of well over 2,000 entries, the selectors will bring together between 50 and 70 works for an exhibition at JVA at Jerwood Space, London from 11 September – 27 October 2013. The exhibition will then tour to venues across the UK, including, for the first time, the Sidney Cooper Gallery, Canterbury Christ Church University in March 2014.

The prizes, which will be awarded to the winning artists at a ceremony on Tuesday 10 September 2013, are a First Prize of £8,000, Second Prize of £5,000 and two Student Awards of £2,000 each.

Registration for artists entering the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 will close at 5pm on Monday 17 June 2013. Once registered, artists are invited to submit their works through one of the regional collection centres.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is open to all artists resident in the UK. Initial entry is by online registration only.

The deadline for online registration is 5pm, 17th June 2013 Register here.
