What is Memoirs of Lost Time?

A series of fine art prints and a coffee table book of short stories and pictures inspired by the romantic notions of childhood memories and the almost dreamlike nature they possess, ‘Memoirs of Lost Time’ by Vikram Kushwah and Trisha Sakhlecha, takes you on an enthralling photographic and literary expedition.

Our ever-increasing voyeuristic tendencies mean we know a whole lot about the people behind the blogs we read, the films we watch, or the music we listen to. A biographical documentation of sorts, of seven creative personalities’ childhood recollections, these photo stories inspire those inquisitive inclinations, yet show the subjects in an unseen portrait of their fantasies and imagination; a very romantic vision of those formative years capturing not only what was, but also what could have been.

Each story takes you into the personal and never seen before world of one of these personalities with photographs featuring the subjects themselves, weaving in and out of reality, where you begin to drift into a realm of imaginative possibilities and yet remain attached to the facts that were. Wonder and curiosity can make seemingly impossible things happen; it’s time for wishful thinking to have it’s due.

Who does Memoirs of Lost Time feature?
Ophelia Lovibond: Having already been named as one of the 55 faces of the future by Nylon Magazine’s Young Hollywood Issue and featured in a string of films including Polanski’s Oliver Twist, Nowhere Boy (a chronicle of Lennon’s formative years), Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman starrer No Strings Attached, Collin Farrel/Keira Knightley starrer London Boulevard and Jim Carrey starrer Mr. Poppers Penguins, Ophelia Lovibond is a star in the making. After interviewing her, the story of a strong willed and independent young girl with a vivid imagination came to the fore.

Emily Beecham: In 6 short years, , English film, television and stage actress Emily Beecham has amassed over 30 credits including a BAFTA winning TV series, a few Hollywood projects. Her lead role in The Calling as a postulant nun entering an unconventional convent brought her much critical acclaim and the Skillset Trailblazer award. During our talk with her, she reveals that as a little girl she was surrounded by various forms of art and spent considerable amount of time with just herself.

Emily Barker: Australian singer-song writer Emily Barker’s track ‘Nostalgia’ was the theme tune for the BBC 1 TV series ‘Wallander’ winning a string of awards including the BAFTA & the Royal Television Society Award for the theme. Having left home at the age of 19 with a backpack she is now planning her 4th album exploring childhood innocence and the theme of ‘home’ and is in the process of bridging the gap between her roots in Australia and her home away from home in England.

Carrie Harwood: A fashion student with a penchant for vintage clothes and whimsical encounters, Carrie set up a blog to write about beautiful clothes, friends, love and happiness. In the three years that the blog has been active, it has an online reach of close to 12,000 followers bringing Carrie awards and opportunities far beyond the expectations one would have of a student. Whether she is writing about her escapades in the woods or dressing up the Dolce & Gabbana windows, her country girl aesthetics are always at the heart of her work.

Elizabeth Lau: Growing up with two younger bothers and parents with a full time business can be quite a test for a girl wanting to explore the world. Silently and without complaining, she blends in and becomes a tomboy and ever so discreetly starts attending classes to become a fashion designer. She becomes Elizabeth Lau, whose designs adorn the pages of Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, The Times and even feature on the cult TV series ‘Sex and the City’: a beautiful journey worth indulging in!

Michael King: This incredibly gifted singer and songwriter from the band ‘Boat to Row’, was recently asked in an interview where his biggest influences came from. He said his granny singing him Lonnie Donegan songs to get him to sleep was pretty important! Without realizing she planted the seeds from an early age and King created such a stir with his gigs in music festivals across the UK including the Moseley Folk Festival that we were compelled to uncover several more stories from his little boy days.

Loulou Androlia: A lingerie designer by profession, a masseuse and psychic in training; an interview with Loulou revealed she believes that as a child she was a witch! She grew up in the English countryside in a ‘modest’ 26-room house with her sister, a beautiful home that she recently had to bid goodbye to. Her recollection of flying down the staircase as a child was a rather unconventional one, to say the least. We took off on an incredible adventure, photographing Loulou in this house of memories, ghosts and an unusual chair in the attic.

About
VIKRAM KUSHWAH, Artist/Photographer: Vikram’s work borders on the ever-so-dizzying line between fantasy and reality, between the conscious and the sub-conscious. He creates images informed by peculiar ideas and strange stories from his childhood, which aesthetically haunting as they are, never escape the thought of fashion, not just in terms of clothing, but also in the sense of time and place. He is a great admirer of the beauty of staged compositions, which put together dream-like states, surrealist ideas and romantic visions in a rather outlandish manner.

TRISHA SAKHLECHA, Writer & Creative Director: A freelance writer, fashion consultant and designer, Trisha lives and works in London. Having published work for the likes of renowned trend forecasting agencies such as WGSN.com & Trendstop.com, Trisha now runs her own fashion, art and lifestyle blog alongside her day job as a fashion designer to the UK high street.
