HELP
We face the same costs that a gallery or museum does in order to make an exhibition happen. The difference being that we cannot charge a fee to enter the exhibition as it goes against the nature of the project, we want everybody to be able to partake. It’s also impossible for a percentage to be taken from the sale of works as they are not technically for sale and no money ever exchanges hands. We’re asking you to become a part of the Art Barter community. By pledging on the Art Barter NY event not only will you receive gifts and acknowledgement but you will be part of an art revolution!

WHAT IS ART BARTER:
Art Barter gives the public the opportunity to acquire art works through alternative means to money.
There is a catch at Art Barter where you do not know which artwork belongs to which artist until after the show’s end. This creates a gamble for the public and makes people value the art without the name, price or title attached. At the same time it entices the viewer into thinking about what they have that is unique to offer the artist.

OUR INSPIRATION:
Early in 2009 we started to recognize that there was a shift in how people were getting hold of what they wanted or needed in life. We were surrounded by projects like the free shop and our friends all started to exchange their skills with each other. We were also inspired by the Burning Man festival in Nevada desert where nothing is for sale but everything is up for barter and the RCA’s secret postcard auction where all artists are treated equally no matter what their name or usual sale price.

From all of these things the concept of Art Barter was born. We created an environment where the artist once again held complete control and where the viewer always had a chance to acquire art works. We wanted to make the viewer value the artworks outside of the art market and also to value themselves by thinking about what skills or assets they have that are unique

HOW IT WORKS:
In November 2009 we launched the first of the Art Barter exhibitions in London followed by the second exhibition in Berlin in June 2010. We also held a Mini Barter show to coincide with Frieze Art Fair 2010 in London. Each major exhibition showcased artists who were based in the city at that time, ranging from established artists to art students whereas the Mini Barter exhibited artists from both Berlin and London. Each artist displayed one art-work which only had a number beside it making the viewer value the work for what it is, rather than for the name, price or title attached. Over the duration of the 3-4 day events the public were invited to make offers on the artworks by filling out barter forms, the offers could be anything at all except for money. At the event’s end each artist read through all the offers made on their work and decided whether they wished to exchange or not. So far we have had a success rate of over 70% of the art works being exchanged with the public.
