With over 100,000 people engaging with exhibitions and events, FORMAT05 was one of the biggest photography festivals of it’s kind in the UK and FORMAT06 is set to be even bigger. Created by Q Arts, Derby City Council and the University of Derby, FORMAT06 will take place across the city of Derby between 22 September and 22 October 2006.
Alongside the major exhibitions the Exposure section of the festival showcases the talent of emerging photographic artists in unexpected spaces across the city.
Through the Mob Format project photographers, from professional to enthusiast, can submit images for exhibition as part of the festival. Participants will be invited to respond to a number of subjects and send their photographs to the festival via email or mobile phone. These will be added to the festival website and the best will be printed out for exhibition.
Exhibiting artists include Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Trent Parke (Magnum), Anne Marie Creamer & Andrew Grassie, Jung-A Yang, John Goto, Nudrat Afza, Tim Simmons and Julian Germain.

A two day professional development event for photographers with presentations and one-to-one portfolio reviews will take place, confirmed speakers include Sophie Wright (Head of Exhibitions, Magnum Photos), David Chandler (Director, Photoworks) and Paul Herrmann (Director, Redeye). A series of tours, events and workshops will also form an important part of the festival alongside ‘Young Format’- events programmed specifically for young people.
