Went to the Tate last night (Britain that is, which I think is a much more intimate and friendly place to see art as apposed to modern) For Gothic Nightmares.
It focused on Fuseli and how he influenced people like William Blake and James Gillray.
I don’t know what I expected, but I didn’t think the place was going to be as full as it was , it was heaving (to be fair far to many people.)
Strange so many people want to see Gothic Nightmares on Valentines Day!!
And it was a full moon, I noticed this while walking down Milbank past the old Labour HQ, wind gusting, the full moon poking out from the dark clouds very apt.
The show was amazing cant remember the last time I had so much fun, kinda the perfect show for a guy who hasn’t grown up – super heroes, blood, guts, naked women, horror, fear, chains , torture etc (cool)
You can see the influence of this work in so much modern stuff –In the superheroes section you can see the early Marvel Superman and the blood an gore reminded me of Quentin Tarantino and Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead.
The show was split into seven sections , I really liked Perverse Classicism and Gothic Gloomth(great word) – oh and there was a really fun nightmare story told in The Phantasmagoria which was great.
Anyway its on untill the beginning of May and follow the link for more details
