Today on the Underground experience sounds from the sea.

Today Friday 26th June 2015, throughout the day Experience sounds from the sea at London Underground stations

This year the National Trust celebrates 50 years since the launch of the Neptune Coastline Campaign. Thanks to the support of many thousands of people, Neptune has helped to fund the acquisition of 574 miles of coastline.

The National Trust now cares for 775 miles of the coastline of England, Wales and Northern Ireland – including the White Cliffs of Dover and the Giant’s Causeway. Millions of people visit these special places every year.
The sound of the sea is especially evocative, associated with nostalgic pleasure-filled days at the beach and dramatic coastal scenery; an escape from the city.

For today only, the National Trust and Transport for London bring sea sounds from our coastline to selected London Underground stations, including several along the Thames, as well as Seven Sisters – the namesake of a stretch of cliffs cared for by the National Trust. Including a short voiceover by veteran comedian Barry Cryer, the sounds will be played at multiple central London stations and Seven Sisters throughout the day.

The project is part of a Transport for London initiative that seeks to bring nature into our Underground stations. A project launched by the Trust this week is asking the public to record the sounds that shape and define our relationship with the coast across the UK. This three-month crowd-sourced sound project – ‘sounds of our shores’ – is a collaboration between the National Trust, National Trust for Scotland and the British Library and finishes on 21st September.
