Disruption at The Royal College of Art Preview Tuesday 22nd January 2013

Sun Ae Kim, MPhil Ceramics & Glass Ale Bench (Disruptive Drinking Event) Visitors to Disruption will be invited to share their stories and feelings about their experiences of drinking from Kim’s collection of ceramic drinking vessels.

Amanda Game, MPhil Critical & Historical Studies and Conor Wilson, PhD Ceramics & Glass – Translation: Object/Text/Object is an open-ended conversation between artist Conor Wilson and curator Amanda Game which is drawing together poems, objects, film, sound and changing handwritten inscriptions.

Pasquier’s sound installation includes a series of empty bird cages filled with the birdsong of the Golden Bunting, a rare and near extinct species.

RCA research students are hosting the second biennial exhibition showcasing the broadest range of art and design practice-led research to date.

Disruption will present work created by 28 participants from programmes across all six schools at the RCA, including Architecture, Design, Fine Art, Humanities and Materials. The exhibition aims to provide visitors with a glimpse into the world of art and design practice-led research, exploring how subversion and disruption are key to its evolution.

Participants responded to the theme by either producing new work, or by connecting their research to the topic. The responses are diverse, from the use of archive material, object, image, installation, projection and talks to discussions, film screenings and performances. Critical Writing PhD student, Bill Balaskas, has erected a 23-metre banner with the phrase “The market will save us” on the facade of the Royal College of Art building in Kensington. Balaskas wants the artwork to provoke debate about the financial markets’ dominance and remind viewers about Government funding cuts to the arts and education. For the piece, Balaskas decided to use the Perpetua typeface, which was also used in the Royal Charter granted to the RCA in 1967.

According to curatorial team members and PhD students, Nils Jean and Claire Jamieson, the purpose of the exhibition is to draw attention to the cutting edge of art and design research and how the RCA is leading in this particular academic field.

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of free, public events that includes a disruptive drinking event where visitors will be asked to engage with a new collection of ceramic drinking vessels; a performance workshop based on human interaction with appliances and on the last afternoon of the exhibition, visitors will be invited to interact with exhibiting artists as they take down their work accompanied by live music and performance.
