#ELEVEN: Mark Powell

1.If you weren’t an artist, what else would you be?
If i were not an artist i would probably just wonder around the different cities of the world.

2. Can you tell us more about your work and what are the main ideas you would like to express?
The idea behind my work is the mystery of each individual, we all try to portray instead of express something much of the time but the face can always hint at something else. Its one of the reasons i use an envelope.

3. How do you start the process of making work?
The process of starting work for me is very easy, it simply just clicks into gear without any extended period of analysis.

4. Do you consider the viewer, when making your work?
I do consider the viewer when producing work but this would never actually change what i would do either.

5. Name 3 artists that have inspired your work?
Chuck close, Jean Michael Basquiat, and Joseph Beuys.

6. Name 3 of your least favourite artists.
Like everything you can always see good and bad. I really dont like some of Tracy Emins work but then i do like some that she has produced. I think its impossible to dislike and entire body of work.

7. What defines something as a work of art?
I would say the creator defines what is a work of art.

8. In times of austerity, do you think art has a moral obligation to respond topically? It may not be a moral responsibilty but an inevitable event. Society is a defining force and it would be natural to respond to that.

?9. Anytime, any place – which artist’s body would you most like to inhabit?
Simply Jean Michael Basquiats

10. What is your favourite ‘ism’?
neo-expressionism

11. What was the most intelligent thing that someone said or wrote about your work?while the faces rarely wear a smile, they do not fully take on the morose…’

12. And the dumbest?
the pencil work of Mark Powell…’

?13. Which artists would you most like to rip off, sorry, I mean appropriate as a critique of originality and authorship?Anyone who uses found objects or a biro pen!

14. Do you care what your art costs? State your reasons!
I dont care what my art costs but at the same time i do care that i want to see the world and have a bite to eat now and then

?15. If Moma and the Tate and the Pompidou wanted to acquire one of your works each, which would you want them to have?15) If they wanted a piece of work they could have a pick of any. Once i finish a piece of work within 45 minutes i hate it (like all artists of course) and so i have to start another to see if i can do better.

16. What’s next for you?
I have a number of shows in the next few months, i will also start working on a larger scale and finishing some paintings too.
