SYMPHONY – MOVEMENT III: The plan was sound; its execution faulty by Annika Eriksson

Deutsche Version siehe unten

VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) and SOUNDFAIR are pleased to announce The plan was sound; its execution faulty by Annika Eriksson. This is the third movement of SYMPHONY, a performance series initiated in September 2010 and continuing through June 2011.

Musicians, composers, and visual artists were invited to make works that expand on the traditional concepts of concert and exhibition, and to present these works as unique events, or movements, in the gallery. Exploring new strategies and situations in performance, each movement of SYMPHONY plays with – or against – an idea of conversion: each musician is confronted with a new staging, which does not resemble a typical concert; likewise, each artist risks a step into the musical world, disregarding the notion that artworks exist as purely visual entities.

No matter how powerful or momentous they may be at their inception, historical events and revolutionary actions fade. This passing into history is the subject of Annika Eriksson’s The plan was sound; its execution faulty. The performance evokes the transient nature of history and explores the failed utopias of our recent past. Visitors to the gallery encounter a darkened space from which emerges Solidaritätslied, the popular 1929 anthem by Hanns Eisler and Bertolt Brecht. Performed on a Theremein, an electronic instrument controlled without direct contact from the player, the song acquires a ghostly presence and lingers like an echo. The plan was sound; its execution faulty, while evocative of nostalgia, ultimately recalls the ideological promises of the original song.

Born in 1956 in Malmö, Sweden, Annika Eriksson came to Berlin via a DAAD fellowship in 2002. Many of her performance-based works are concerned with social interactions and the events and stories that comprise daily life. These are brought to vivid form in the artist’s installations, photographs and video works. She has exhibited her work internationally for over a decade and has participated in exhibitions at Temporäre Kunsthalle, Berlin; Hayward Gallery, London; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Platform Garanti, Istanbul; Gasworks, London; Arnolfini, Bristol; and the Venice Biennale. Her most recent solo project, Wir sind wieder da, was presented in 2010 at daadgalerie, Berlin. Annika Eriksson currently lives and works in Berlin

SYMPHONY is an ongoing collaboration between VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) and SOUNDFAIR, a Berlin-based exhibition collective whose aim is to re-contextualize music through its presentation as unique artworks. In the coming months, additional movements of SYMPHONY will be presented in the gallery by Bo Christian Larsson, Ari Benjamin Meyers and Anri Sala. Please visit vwberlin.com or soundfair.net for more information on forthcoming events.

The plan was sound; its execution faulty by Annika Eriksson will be performed at VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) on Friday, 7 January, from 19.00 to 21.00 (with intermissions). For more information please contact the gallery.

VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) and SOUNDFAIR freuen sich den dritten Satz von SYMPHONY The plan was sound; its execution faulty von Annika Eriksson anzukündigen.

Annika Eriksson greift in ihrer Performance The plan was sound; its execution faulty dieses Thema auf. The plan was sound; its execution faulty , obwohl an Nostalgie erinnernd, werden letztlich die ideologischen Versprechen vom ursprünglichen Lied hervorgerufen.
